Summary
Mask Network is a portal that enables users to access the world of Web 3.0 by seamlessly sending encrypted messages and cryptocurrencies, in addition to accessing decentralized apps (dApps) on traditional and decentralized social networks. In short, Mask Network wants to bring the new, open internet to already existing social platforms so that more people can engage with Web 3.0.
Mask Network’s Crypto Vision For Social Media
The current iteration of the Internet is largely dominated by tech companies who control how users engage with the online world: what they post, what they see, and with whom they communicate. Users often do not have full ownership of the content they post, because today’s Web 2.0 platforms can make content disappear if it does not adhere to their standards.
The goal of Mask Network is to create features on traditional social media platforms that are compatible with the decentralized social media world, while maintaining a strong degree of familiarity to Web 2.0 users. This way, more people can engage with the world of Web 3.0 without leaving Web 2.0 sites.
Web 2.0 can be thought of as what the general public today considers to be the “internet”: information sharing, crowdsourced content, multidirectional data flows, and social media. Web 3.0 is about taking back control of user information in a decentralized manner and creating a censorship-resistant, open internet that’s powered by new technology like blockchain.
What Is Mask Network?
The Mask Network currently supports a number of decentralized applications (dApps) — including Uniswap and SushiSwap — and is compatible with many social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook. Here’s how it works: Once a user either installs the Mask extension or downloads the app and connects their accounts, users can display non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on their social media profiles, bid on an NFT from a platform such as OpenSea or Rarible, share or donate to a grant on Gitcoin, send cryptocurrency with a social media post, and more.
Mask Network’s release of its 2.0 iteration includes the multi-chain Mask wallet, a MaskID login system that aggregates users’ social media accounts and Web 3.0 addresses, and a dApp marketplace called D.Market. Mask Network is available on Chrome Web Store, Firefox ADD-ONs, and beta on iOS and Android devices.
The $MASK Token
$MASK is the native token of MaskDAO, which is the governing decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) of the Mask ecosystem. Mask Network launched $MASK in February 2021 via Mask’s Initial Twitter Offering (ITO) feature. An ITO is a decentralized asset offering feature that lets users participate in token launches directly on Twitter. Projects can reward users or build awareness through ITOs by offering their existing tokens with a discount or by launching a new token.
A total of 100,000,000 $MASK tokens were created at genesis. As $MASK is the governance token of the MaskDAO, each $MASK represents one vote in DAO-related events. Over time, the Mask Network team and ecosystem members will develop more blockchain social media products and services, such as the Mask Grant Program, which will provide financial support to the projects that can contribute to or be integrated into the Mask Network crypto ecosystem.
