Helpful Tips to Understand Gemini’s KYC and Onboarding Process
In part two of our blog series on compliance procedures, we dive deeper into Gemini’s KYC process, focus on questions and considerations for customers, and provide tips for a smooth onboarding process. (Missed part one? Read What is KYC and Why does it Matter for Cryptocurrency Buyers).
Not sure what we might need? Feel like you submitted all your information but have yet to be fully verified to trade and or withdraw from your account? Here is a checklist to help move you through onboarding.
What information does Gemini require and collect?
When customers sign up for a Gemini account, applicable regulations require us to collect: full legal name, date of birth, address, phone number, social security number (for US citizens only) and email.__ However, additional documentation is required to be fully verified and to withdraw from the exchange__. This includes:
- U.S. residents: A valid photo ID, such as a passport, state-issued driver’s license, state-issued identification card, or residence permit/card.
- Singapore residents: A valid photo ID, such as a passport, national ID, or driving license. or You can also opt to use SingPass (if applicable).
- International residents: A valid photo ID, such as passport, national ID, a driver’s license from your country of residence as registered on Gemini, and/or proof of address document.
Haven’t heard from us?
- Add our email address to your favorites! Please make sure our email address no-reply@em.gemini.com is added to your inbox to receive any important updates.
- We only communicate about account updates via email - check your spam folder if you can’t find us.
Having trouble submitting documentation?
- When you are submitting documentation, ensure it is clear, complete, and not expired. All types of identification documents should be fully readable, free of glare, and without any cut offs or missing information.
- When asked for “proof of address,” we require a full-page scan of a utility, cable or cell phone bill, or a credit card. Please make sure the document displays your full name, current residential address, and is dated no more than 90 days from the day you submit.
- All documents must be submitted through http://exchange.gemini.com/upload.
Unable to withdraw from your Gemini account?
- In order to enable withdrawals from your account, we must first verify your identity. If we weren’t able to verify your identity, you will be notified via email with next steps.
- Once we’ve completed the review process, you’ll receive an email notification on the status of your account.
Having issues with two-factor authentication? How do I verify my phone number?
- Gemini requires two-factor authentication (2FA) for all users as an extra layer of protection for your account.
- We recommend using Authy, a mobile app specifically for 2FA, to generate unique codes each time you login to your Gemini account.
- We recommend disabling the multi-device option to safeguard your Authy account even if your phone number is targeted by a successful phone porting attack.
- When signing up for a Gemini account, you will be asked to verify your phone number and will be sent a text containing a 7-digit code.
- If you have the Authy app installed on your phone, you will receive a push notification with your Gemini security code. Please ensure you have Authy notifications enabled.
- You can then enter the code on Gemini to complete the phone confirmation stage.
The KYC process is designed to enhance customer protection, secure our exchange and promote a safe and healthy market environment for our users. If you have any questions, please reach out to our customer support team.
